Facebook Launches Messenger Day

On March 9, 2017 Facebook launched Messenger Day to help you find and connect with your friends. You can find it at the top of the chat app on Android and iOS or on your desktop in messaging threads. You now have the ability to share decorated videos and photos with friends in a new and engaging way. This new feature resembles Snapchat Stories and can be used for making plans. It’s expected that Messenger Day will become popular since many people are already using Messenger anyway, which may give Snapchat a run for its money. While Snapchat Stories gives users the chance to show what they’ve been doing, Messenger Day features an “Active Now” filter and a “Who’s up for?” filter that will get people planning and into action. In simple terms, Facebook may have put something useful together to rival “more fun than useful” Snapchat Stories. Try it out for yourself. Let others know that you are going out for supper and take a photo. See if any of your friends decide to engage in a conversation and make plans with you. Instead of just watching what you’ve already done that was fun, your friends can come and join you while you’re doing something. If you have specific friends that shouldn’t see these posts, they can be blocked with the “Everyone Except” function. As well, you can put together a list of friends that will have the ability to watch and keep track of your “Days” or you can directly send posts to specific friends on an individual basis. You can also see who has looked at your Day when you scroll down to the bottom of the posts. Categorized filters are fun and exciting with captions such as “Let’s grab drinks” and “Who’s up for grabbing coffee?”. You can even create your own filter if you can’t find the right one in the list. There are no ads currently being shown on Messenger Day but that doesn’t mean that they might not be there in the future. As well, only individuals can use this new feature for now. Explore Your Options with the New Twitter Tab for iOS and Android The Moments tab on Twitter is being replaced by a new Explore tab that will bring together search, Moments and trends and it closely resembles the Explore tab found on Instagram. The Moments tab has highlighted notable Tweet collections that have been put together by editors at Twitter and they’ll still be available in the new Explore tab but will be de-emphasized. Just as you see on Instagram, the icon for this tab is a magnifying glass. When you click on it, you’ll have access to a number of discovery and search features rolled into one on its mobile toolbar. Search, Moments, featured videos and trending hashtags can now all be found in the same place. While none of these features can be considered new, they have been scattered on the Twitter app. Now they’ll all be accessible under the magnifying glass icon. In the past, the Moments tab didn’t turn out to be a game changer for the company so it’s time to say goodbye to the standalone tab. Users with an iOS platform on their mobile devices should see the changes implemented on Thursday, January 26 while the new changes will appear in the coming weeks for Android users. While the new tab looks good enough, there may be room for further improvement. For example, you still can’t see the top links of the people you are following or the tweets that have been most retweeted during the day. We’re waiting anxiously for that one to appear!
